How to Install Skins on Minecraft Bedrock and PE

2026-08-10 · 4 min read

Bedrock Edition (Windows, Xbox, Mobile, Switch) and Pocket Edition (iOS/Android) share the same skin system. Here are the two main ways to install a custom skin.

Method 1: The .mcpack File

This is the cleanest method. A .mcpack file is just a renamed .zip that Minecraft knows how to open. SkinForge exports in this format.

On iOS

  1. Export your skin from SkinForge (or download a .mcpack from any source) and tap "Share" → "Open in Minecraft."
  2. Minecraft opens and imports the skin automatically.
  3. Go to Settings → Profile → Edit Character → Skins and select your new skin.

On Android

  1. Download the .mcpack file to your device.
  2. Open a file manager and tap the .mcpack. Android should offer to open it with Minecraft.
  3. If it doesn't, long-press the file → "Open with" → Minecraft.
  4. After import, find it under Settings → Profile → Edit Character → Skins.

On Windows (Bedrock)

  1. Double-click the .mcpack file. Minecraft opens and imports it automatically.
  2. Select the skin under Settings → Profile → Edit Character → Owned.

On Xbox or Switch

Xbox and Switch Bedrock don't support sideloading third-party skin files. You're limited to skins from the Marketplace or the character creator bundles. The best workaround is using a skin pack created by a creator you trust — these are available through the Marketplace.

Method 2: PNG Direct Import

Some Bedrock versions let you import a raw PNG. The steps vary by platform:

Mobile (iOS / Android)

  1. Go to Settings → Profile → Edit Character → Skins → Browse.
  2. On newer versions, there's an option to import from your photo library or files.
  3. Select your 64x64 PNG.
  4. Choose Classic or Slim arm type, then save.

Windows (Bedrock)

  1. Open Settings → Profile → Edit Character.
  2. Click the skin slot you want to customize.
  3. Click "Choose New Skin" and select your PNG file.

Java Edition (Bonus)

Java skins are even simpler — no .mcpack needed:

  1. Go to minecraft.net and log in with your Microsoft account.
  2. Click your profile name → Profile.
  3. Click Upload a skin. Select your 64x64 PNG.
  4. Choose Classic or Slim arm type. Save.

The change applies the next time you open Minecraft. No restart required if the game is already open — it updates live.

FAQ

My .mcpack isn't importing. What's wrong?

Make sure Minecraft is fully updated. Older versions may not recognize the .mcpack format. On Android, try a different file manager — some don't pass the file correctly to Minecraft.

Can other players see my custom skin?

Yes, on most servers. If you're on a server that forces a default skin for some players, contact the server admin. Most vanilla servers show your custom skin to everyone.

My skin is showing as Steve/Alex. Why?

The game may not have finished syncing your skin from Mojang's servers. Wait a minute and rejoin. If it still shows the default, check your account at minecraft.net to confirm the upload was successful.

What's the difference between Classic and Slim arm types?

Classic arms are 4 pixels wide (Steve body type). Slim arms are 3 pixels wide (Alex body type). Choosing the wrong type distorts the sleeve pixels. If you notice weird arm texture stretching, switch arm types.
