You uploaded a new skin and the game still shows the old one — or worse, plain Steve or Alex. This is one of the most common Minecraft annoyances, and it's almost always fixable. Work through these in order; the early ones solve most cases.
On Java Edition, your skin is stored on Mojang's servers and can take a short while to propagate. Fully close the game, wait a minute or two, and relaunch. If you're on a server, disconnect and rejoin. A surprising number of "my skin won't show" problems are just this sync delay.
Sign in at minecraft.net (or open the Minecraft Launcher's Skins tab) and check that your new skin is set as active. If the upload silently failed — a bad file, a network hiccup — the site will still show your previous skin. Re-upload if needed.
This trips up a lot of people. Java and Bedrock use completely separate skin systems:
If you uploaded on the website but play Bedrock, that's why nothing changed. See our per-platform change-skin guide for the right method.
If your skin shows up but the arms look wrong — stretched, squished, or with a weird gap at the shoulder — you applied the wrong arm model. Classic is 4-pixel arms (Steve); Slim is 3-pixel arms (Alex). Re-apply the skin with the other arm type and the sleeves will line up. Our dimensions guide explains the difference.
A skin that won't upload or renders as a mess usually has a file problem:
On Bedrock, a stuck skin can sometimes be cleared by switching to a default skin, closing the game fully, reopening, and re-applying your custom skin. This forces the game to reload the texture instead of showing a cached version.
If your skin shows fine in single-player but not on a specific server, the server may be the reason:
If it only happens on one server, ask that server's admins whether custom skins are allowed. This isn't something you can fix from your end.
When all else looks correct but the skin still won't update, sign out of your Microsoft account in the launcher (or game), sign back in, and relaunch. Re-authenticating forces a fresh pull of your profile, including your current skin.
SkinForge exports proper 64x64 files — PNG for Java, .mcpack for Bedrock — so upload errors are one less thing to worry about.

Usually a sync delay or a server that hides custom skins. Rejoin after a minute; if it only happens on one server, that server likely restricts custom skins.
My skin shows for me but not for friends. Why?
That points to the server, not your account. On Bedrock especially, some servers and Realms only show default or trusted skins to other players.
I uploaded on the website but nothing changed in-game.
You're probably on Bedrock. The website only changes Java skins. Change Bedrock skins in-game under Profile → Edit Character.
The arms look stretched — is my skin broken?
No, you just picked the wrong arm model. Re-apply and switch between Classic (4-pixel) and Slim (3-pixel) arms.
